The Power of Keyword-Rich Domain Names in Book Promotion

Guest Post by Dana Lynn Smith

Many authors choose a website domain name that closely matches the title of their book. That’s great for book promotion purposes. But if your domain name doesn’t include important keywords, you could be missing out on search engine traffic in promoting your book.

According to Search Engine News, a domain name that exactly matches the keywords entered into a search engine will automatically give that domain a significant advantage in the search results. Having keywords in the domain name also increases the chance of the searcher clicking on your link when they see it on the results page.

For example, I purchased the domain name “SellingToLibraries.com” for my book The Savvy Book Marketer’s Guide to Selling Your Book to Libraries. My book promotion site appears on the first page of Google if you search for “selling to libraries” or “selling your book to libraries.”

Using Multiple Domain Names

If your important keywords aren’t contained in your existing domain name, it may be wise to purchase one or more additional domains for book promotion purposes. You can “point” or “forward” keyword-rich topical domain names to your home page or to specific pages within the site. Anyone typing or clicking on the domain will be automatically redirected to the page the domain points to.

If you have multiple products, you can purchase a keyword-rich domain name for each product and point it to that product’s page on your site. It’s probably not a good idea to point more than a couple of domains to the same page—you don’t want to give the appearance of trying to manipulate the search engines.

I also recommend buying a domain for your author name. You can point it to the Media Room or About page on your website, or set up a separate author website that contains your bio and media information and links to your other sites, articles you have written, etc. For an example, see www.DanaLynnSmith.com.

Finding Domain Names

The best domain names for are memorable and brandable and contain important keywords. To create a keyword-rich domain for book promotion, think about what keywords potential customers would be most likely to use when searching for information on your topic. If you haven’t already done keyword research, try using the Google Keyword Tool and the free version of Wordtracker.
Finding good domain names for book promotion that aren’t already taken can be a challenge. Try adding additional words such as central, hub, book, source or how to. You can use free online tools like Nameboy and BustAName to generate ideas.

Some other tips:

  • Try to get the .com version of the domain name if possible. The second choice is .net
  • Don’t use hyphens or other characters in your domain name
  • Don’t make the domain name too long
  • Make sure the words in your domain name don’t spell something unintended when they are run together with no spaces.

Domain Registration

When purchasing domain names for book promotion, look for a domain registrar that has low prices, good domain management tools, and free and easy domain forwarding. I’ve written a free tutorial on how to purchase domain names through GoDaddy, the domain registrar that I use.

I pay a little extra for “private registration” to keep my contact information out of thepublic WHOIS database which lists the owners of all domain names.

If you get your domain names through your web hosting service, it’s best to have the domains registered in your own name in case you change hosting companies.

Conclusion

Compare your existing domain name to your most important keywords and consider the benefits of buying additional domains for your home page or other pages on your site. In the battle for web traffic and book promotion, every advantage counts!

Would you like a few tips from an SEO Support VA?

One of the greatest strengths of internet business is the near complete lack of startup costs. While brick-and-mortar business can command thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, of dollars in startup costs and overheads, an online business can be launched for under $100.

However, there is a hidden currency to online business that often goes ignored: opportunity cost. When you invest in endless SEO campaigns to go nowhere, you are taking time away from potentially more lucrative activities. While SEO is often touted as the ultimate form of traffic — it is 100% free, and significantly more valuable than non-targeted visitors — it can often be an expensive activity in terms of lost income. The Internet is an amazing tool for many people but it is not necessarily easy to decipher. A virtual assistant with the skills to dig out relevant information from the rest of the jumble can specialize in research. Internet researchers are in great demand for all sorts of clients.

In school they teach students to pick out the theme of a paragraph or story. After reading it is the job of the student to figure out what is the most important part of what they have read. As a researcher, that is what you will do for others who do not have the time or the skill to find it themselves. Compiling information that is useful to others is a part of your business.

Customer service is an important aspect of every business. When customers aren’t satisfied they go elsewhere. For business owners that don’t have the time to provide proper customer service, they can hire a virtual assistant with the skills to do the job.

What is customer service? It can be as simple as answering an email from a customer in a timely fashion. Or, it is providing a FAQ page on the business website. To a customer, having their needs met is the definition of good customer service.

The Market

After business gains clients through marketing and advertising, that is only half of the job. They may have fifty one-time customers who spend $100 each on the site. That is $5,000 worth of business.

Golden blockCreating viral video is a fine art, and one that does not really have any stone walls or clear cut definitions. From silly videos to smart advertising, the science of what spreads and what doesn’t is incredibly imprecise, and the ability of anyone to predict viral marketing success is incredibly suspect. Viral marketing is so effective because it’s difficult to predict, and with hundreds of people out there competing for attention, creating that ‘tipping point’ video is growing more and more difficult.

This toolkit will help you get a leg up on your competitors and push you closer to creating that star viral video. Not everything here is essential, but for great viral marketing success it is smart to keep… Continue reading the rest of this article...

Audio and video media are becoming commonplace in online business. It is easier to record this way for later use. Businesses will need the services of a virtual assistant to turn the recorded media into print.

Medical professionals have used Dictaphone and dictating services for a long time. Doctors later have their notes transcribed for patient and hospital records. The same goes for legal proceedings. It is more convenient to use a recording device and later create a written copy.

The Market

Online businesses have found ways to market their products with audio and video. Tutorials, how-tos and interviews are uploaded to websites for viewing and hearing. But, we all know that sometimes you can’t always understand what is being said. That requires the need for a transcribed record of the recording.

Keeping the books organized is a major battle for most small businesses. Sure, the business receives money from clients and pays for equipment but as far as the bookkeeping goes, it may be a drawer in the office with tons of paper receipts. The virtual assistant bookkeeper sorts through these papers to sort out the books.

Someone has to do record keeping. In a small online business, that person is the owner. If they don’t have time during the day, then after they have dealt with other issues, it is time to record some numbers. That makes for a long day – every day.

More than one business has ended up bankrupt because of bad bookkeeping. One day, the owner looks up and sees that they have sucked their resources dry… Continue reading the rest of this article...

Businesses are all about the client and the product. There are files for clients and files for products. With so much paperwork, it is hard to keep everything organized. Businesses, especially smaller ones, need a virtual assistant database manager.

It would be nice for business owners if they could just talk about and sell their products or services all day long. Unfortunately there is more to it than that. Nowadays, businesses live and die on statistical analysis and other reports. In order to generate these reports you need the data to back them up.

Poorly organized data can weaken a company. For instance, how would a business ever know how their products are doing in certain areas of the country? What about customer feedback?

A business captures data in order to grow… Continue reading the rest of this article...

Cathedral Rock, Sedona, ArizonaTo many amateur marketers, viral marketing is seen as something that should be prepared as a product launches to capitalize on the direct potential sales. The thinking is that after someone sees a Youtube video or funny meme page, they’ll click through, hand over their credit card details, and walk away with a new product. While this occasionally happens, the click through rate is never particularly good, the bounce rate upon credit card entry is huge, and the total payoff is generally very little for the amount of effort that’s put in.

Why? Because viral content isn’t often associated with spending. People typically go on Youtube not to look for new things to buy, but to… Continue reading the rest of this article...

Many virtual assistants worked in other areas of corporate America before they went into business for themselves. If your area was real estate, think about the opportunities waiting for you as a real estate virtual assistant.

Real estate agents either work for a company or they can go out on their own and work as an independent. To make money, they sell homes and other properties. Agents stay busy with listings, showings, sales and other projects. Combine that with their office responsibilities and the “little details” and you have way too much for one person to handle.

The Market

As any business owner will tell you, it is hard to juggle promotion, client satisfaction, daily operations and professional affiliations all at once. Many new businesses like an independent real estate agent are not… Continue reading the rest of this article...
