Social Bookmarking as a Business Tool

By AndreaKalli

Social bookmarking sites and services have sprung up alongside the social networking sites commonly used by many. Social bookmarking sites connect users based on the content they generate or prefer. This makes social bookmarking an especially useful business tool for web based businesses.

You may be reading a blog post or a piece of writing on a website. Somewhere on the page, generally immediately following the content, you’ll see a group of different icons. If you run your mouse pointer over these icons, you’ll see that they have names like Technorati, Digg, Furl, and Delicious; but what are these icons and what do they mean?

These icons are actually links to different social bookmarking websites. Much like the bookmarks that you can set in your web browser, you can use social bookmarks to mark a website you’d like to come back to or share with others – the difference with social bookmarking is that other users can see your bookmarks and visit them.

Not all of these social bookmarking sites work in exactly the same way. While the general idea is the same regardless of the service, different services are focused on different types of media. Flickr is for photos, while Squidoo will be focused on an area of expertise. Others are specialized for reviews of music or films.

If you’re interested in using a social bookmarking site for your business, you should start by looking for one that applies to the type of content you have or the sort of business you are in. By doing this, you’ll be able to generate more interest in your business from those who are the most likely to become customers. To get the best results out of social bookmarking, you’ll want to create content which people find interesting and useful; this will net your website visitors and backlinks.

By crafting good content, business owners can build a dedicated audience and a better search engine position for their site by using social bookmarking sites. To determine what kind of content is popular in your niche, have a look through some of the social bookmarking sites and see what kind of content is being bookmarked by users. This will let you know what kind of content to create for your own site; social bookmarking sites can also help you to find out what your competitors are doing to try to reach your target market.

Social bookmarking is pretty simple concept; but used properly, it can drive a lot of traffic to your site and build interest in your business.
