Rewarding Yourself Along the Way

By AndreaKalli

It is necessary to take regular breaks from the task at hand in order to be able to reach the end. It is also perfectly reasonable to give oneself rewards for every level crossed on the way to the destination. If you think that you will reward yourself right at the end of the task then there are high probabilities of you failing to reach it. There are many times along the way when you will need these rewards to remind you why you are doing this in the first place. They will also provide you with positive emotions and encourage you to move ahead in search of the next reward.

A marathon runner does not complete his entire lap in at one go. There are regular stops on his way where he gets to retain and regain his energy by drinking water or other energy drinks. The same needs to be done in case of any task that takes time to complete.

You can even have semi-extravagant gifts waiting for you in line. Small tokens of encouragement are enough to motivate the competitor to move ahead. However, waiting till you finish the work at hand before accepting a reward is foolish and dangerous. Sometimes, in the zest to carry on without a break many people have had to quit mid way in whatever they were doing.

Gather your friends and family around you and make a list of possible rewards for yourself on the way to accomplishing your latest goal. They should all be a direct relevance to the task at hand and remind you as to why it is important for you to accomplish it at all. Take a break from work and go on a day-holiday with your spouse/friend/significant other. If this is too much of a reward for you then go out for dinner at your favorite restaurant with your best friend. Take the night off, and catch up on all the lost hours of sleep.

Sometimes when you work for a long time without a break you tend to get frustrated. The finish line seems far off and all you see is a load of hard work in front of you to do. In times of despair like this you need to reward yourself for what you have already completed. This will remind you that it is possible for you to continue completing the rest of it without giving up.

Rewards make you work to reach the next level where you will be given the next reward. However, do not overdo the rewarding ritual. Keep it relevant and real. They should always remind you to keep going to achieve the long term benefits.

If you don’t have rewards you will lose sight of the final destination. There is a tendency to give up, or become confused about your actions. Rewards remind you of what is important for you do and achieve. Therefore, they are important to be spread out evenly throughout the path to accomplishments.
